Spenborough Chamber of Trade & Commerce
Cleckheaton Christmas Lights Committee
Each year members of the Spenborough Chamber of Trade & Commerce raise over £12,000 to erect, maintain and host the annual Christmas Festival with Victorian Markets and Fairground. Whilst Kirklees Council fully support the event and the economic benefits, they only provide assistance with storage of the lights, annual PAT testing, supply/erection of the Savoy Square Christmas Tree and a grant from the highways budget of approx £2256/yr.
The cost difference is made up through organising events throughout the year, Member Subscriptions and the red collection boxes you see throughout the Town Center.
In 2016 we established that a number of features & festoon did not have a long shelf life. In addition, wind damage has taken its toll on a number of trees that house the white pea-lights. By the end of 2017 switch on we hope to have built a substantial reserve fund to allow us to replace some lights for 2018.
Social media feedback has also told us that both residents & visitors would like to see the return of the pea-lights in the Memorial Park. Originally this was funded by a £10,000 grant from Kirklees Council. Whilst the lights are all damaged due to high winds, we are fortunate that the main's cabling remains in place and is something that we hope to re-instate in sections over 2018/19/20.
We welcome any questions, involvement & all ideas for fundraising! You'll find more info below.
In the meantime if you need to report damage, broken feature or problem with the lights please contact us through the below form or Emergency Contact Number: 01274 873495
To create a Christmas atmosphere in Cleckheaton Town Center by planning and erecting the best possible Christmas Lights Display, within the constraints of the budget, from early in November [Usually the Saturday prior to Remembrance Sunday] until just after Christmas every year.
To provide a day of entertainment for the residents of Cleckheaton and visitors from surrounding areas to enjoy the ‘Switch On’ of the lights around the town and on the Christmas tree in Savoy Square. This is funded, where possible by sponsorship and Traders who actively pay their subs to The Chamber of Trade. This event has been running for over thirty years.
This requires the Spenborough Chamber of Trade & Commerce along with Kirklees Council to ensure the proper management and maintenance of the lights and to ensure that the correct management and operational procedures are followed regarding the erection and dismantling of the Christmas Lights and also the provision of the ‘Switch On’ event.
STRUCTURE OF THE COMMITTEE
The Committee will discharge is responsibilities by:
Meeting regularly and reporting to the Membership.
Regularly inspecting, renovating and replacing Christmas lights where needed.
Planning and budgeting for new lighting displays.
Planning and budgeting for the ‘Switch On’ event, obtaining sponsorship where possible.
The Christmas Lights and ‘Switch on’ event rely very heavily on volunteers who work hard throughout the year planning displays and maintaining the lights, but especially during the erection and dismantling of the lights.
The Christmas Lights and ‘Switch On’ would not happen in Cleckheaton in the way that it does without them. In addition, we welcome Rotarians from Cleckheaton Rotary Club who help us at these times. We are grateful to those who give up their time for the benefit and enjoyment of our local residents and visitors.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or a sponsor, please contact email@example.com or ring 01274 873495.
